For the past 33 years Karl Shepherd (or Monty as they call him) has been providing financial services in  Texas, Tennessee and New Jersey. He helps customers understand not just how much money they make but also what's kept by them, be it their homes or investments- Karl will offer sound advice to get the best out of life! His passion lies with educating families on managing their money properly so they can live without worry or stress whenever possible; this starts by analyzing each client's needs before getting started into any plan development stage. Over the course of my career, I have worked in some of the country's largest banks in the world as a trustee for fixed income securities and have had extensive experience working with all aspects of creating and managing securities. Q. How did you get into this profession?

After graduating from Morehouse, I was offered my first position with a large Bank in San Francisco. My role there was as a trustee for fixed income securities within the North American capital market. While working there and a number of larger banking institutions, I gained a deep understanding of how to administer and manage securities, as well as how interest rates impact the value of these assets.Throughout my professional experience, I also developed a passion for educating middle-income families about financial services and helping them build wealth. This is because I saw firsthand the stark divide between those with significant assets and those in the middle struggling to get by. Despite this disparity, I saw that many families did not have access to the high-quality financial services that they needed to succeed.Given all of this, I am passionate about working to improve access to quality financial services for middle America and empowering more people to build and grow their wealth over time. Whether through improved education or new policies, I am committed to finding new ways to help families in need achieve their goals and reach their full potential.

Q- Why do you do what you do?

Having worked with a number of different banks over the years, I had the opportunity to work with institutions and their employees. Ultimately, it always came down to offering educational customer service. You never forget where you came from, and I grew up in middle America.  My focus has always been on providing high-quality customer service, meeting face-to-face with clients to discuss their needs and providing educational support so each customer can understand modern portfolio tools to truly help families see how bright the future can be and so they’d  feel comfortable knowing their assets were in the right hands. Whether I was meeting with professors, government workers, or employees from other institutions, my goal was always to provide one-on-one support and help my clients achieve their financial goals. That’s the core of my work, rather than offering solutions that benefit me more than the customers. I once visited a local cobbler to get some shoes repaired. The cobbler stopped me and remarked that I must be a salesman, noting that my left shoe had more wear than the right due to all the time I spent getting in and out of the car. This anecdote serves as a testament to the level of dedication I bring to my work each and every day, meeting countless clients and helping them get on track towards achieving a great retirement through financial planning. I may be in sales, but I sleep well at night knowing I’m improving lives. Whether I’m working with institutions, corporations, small businesses, non-profit organizations or offering one-on-one advice, I am committed to providing top-quality educational services to all of my clients. I found profound value in knowing that I had educated and impacted a person’s life by helping them create plans to be able retire comfortably. Many are so busy with building their lives, they don't have the time or energy for planning ahead towards an outstanding retirement when it will eventually come around full circle! One particular instance that stands out in my mind is when I met an extremely talented band director for Tennessee State University. He was woefully unprepared for his retirement and in his early 50s. He was investing very little and was not prepared to even think about retirement! As with many families, his wife planned their funds. So when went home to tell his wife we would be meeting, she was put-off.  “Who is Karl Shepperd! Who does he think he is?! Who’s going to tell YOU what to do with YOUR money!?” A few months after we met,  he was unfortunately murdered while attempting to deescalate a neighborly dispute. After some time, his wife and I spoke. She told me that despite her initial reactions, she was glad to have met me because our discussion has affected how they planned their finances. In fact, they found financial freedom quickly by paying off debts prior to the incident. I was able to protect her asset portfolio thanks to the solutions we put in place, shortly prior. My personal motto is simple: “Whenever you do the right thing for the right reasons for the right people,  you can sleep best at night” Unfortunately right now there are too many agents doing the wrong thing by taking advantage of people.

Q. How did you develop this drive and dedication to providing financial freedom?

Growing up, I was fortunate to have two incredible role models in my life: my father and my grandmother. Not only did they both exemplify the values of hard work, dedication, and perseverance, but they also played a key role in shaping who I am today.

My father was a highly decorated military officer for the US Army. In his decades-long career in the military, he made countless contributions to our country's defense and earned countless awards and accolades for his steadfast service. Despite all of his achievements, what I remember most about him is his tremendous work ethic. Before the sun had even risen each day, he would be up and out the door, ready to take on whatever challenges lay ahead. He instilled a motivational drive in me very early and taught me how to do more things before 8am than most people in the world. Meanwhile, my grandmother was an incredibly successful real estate broker in the state of Texas. Through her work, she not only achieved financial independence but also helped countless others to do the same by providing them with guidance and support throughout their home buying process. She demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity and always encouraged me to persevere no matter what challenges came my way. My grandmother was the oldest living african american real estate broker in the state of Texas. Thanks to my father's amazing example and my grandmother's unwavering tenacity and optimism, I learned at a young age what it means to live an empowered life filled with purpose and meaning.

Q. I see you also offer opportunities for self employment?

We’re a very transparent company so we tell it like it is! When we hire new agents, we want people to grow and extend the network to help as many people as possible. Creating a space for opportunity within a business that values diversity is very rewarding.
